Curacao, Anjouan and what a casino licence really means
CasinoCrypto Editorial · 5 min read
Almost every crypto casino you will read about carries an offshore licence — most often from Curacao, and increasingly from Anjouan in the Comoros. Knowing what those licences do and do not cover is the single most useful piece of due diligence a player can do.
What an offshore licence gives you
A licensed operator must be incorporated, must submit to a regulator complaints process, and must run certified random number generators. If a site disappears with your balance, a licence gives you somewhere to complain.
What it does not give you
It does not give you the consumer protections of a UK, Malta or US state licence: no deposit limit mandates, no independent ombudsman with binding powers, and no compensation scheme. If you live in a regulated market, playing offshore usually means playing outside your own regulator entirely.
The Curacao reform
Curacao has been reorganising its regime under the Curacao Gaming Authority, replacing the old master-licence system with direct licensing. Some operators moved to Anjouan during the transition. A licence move is not automatically a red flag, but a licence that no operator page will name is.
How to check a licence
Scroll to the operator footer, find the licence number and the named company, then look that number up on the regulator register. If the footer names no company at all, treat everything else on the site with caution.
